Thermostat problems, lifespan and upkeep

The thermostat is the control that tells your furnace, heat pump or air conditioner when to run. Most trouble is simple: a blank screen is usually dead batteries or lost power, and a house that is not reaching temperature is often a setting, a schedule or hold, or a thermostat reading the wrong temperature. Sometimes the cause is the system itself, so see the furnace and heat pump guides too.

Common problems
How long it should last

Typical lifespan: around 10 years

Signs it is near the end:

  • The display is unreliable or goes blank even with fresh batteries.
  • The room temperature doesn't match what the thermostat shows.
  • The system runs at the wrong times or won't respond to changes.
  • Repairs cost close to the price of a new unit.
Basic upkeep
  • Replace the batteries if your thermostat uses them, before the display goes dim.
  • Keep the thermostat out of direct sun, drafts and the path of vents and lamps.
  • Check the schedule and any hold when the season changes.
  • Switch off the furnace or air handler power before taking the thermostat off the wall.
Common fixes
  • Furnace won't heat?

    FurnaceFall

The furnace runs but the house stays cold, which is usually a clogged filter, a thermostat setting, or an ignition fault.

  • Heat pump not heating?

    Heat pumpFall

The heat pump runs but the house stays cold, which is usually thermostat settings, a clogged filter, or an iced-over outdoor unit.

  • Washer won't drain?

    Washer

Water is left in the drum after the cycle, which is usually a clogged pump filter or a kinked drain hose.

  • Fridge not cooling?

    Fridge

The fridge section is warm or warming. The cause depends on whether the freezer is still cold, and the first fix is often free.

  • Washer won't spin?

    Washer

The drum fills and washes but won't spin, which is usually an unbalanced load, the lid switch, or a drain problem.
