Fridge ice maker not working?

Most often the ice maker is switched off, the water supply is shut or kinked, or the filter is overdue, and all three are quick to check. If the freezer is too warm or the fill tube has frozen, the ice maker can't do its job even though it's fine.

Is the freezer itself too warm?

If food is soft or ice melts, the problem is the freezer, not the ice maker. Freezer not freezing

Likely causes
  1. Ice maker switched off or arm raised

    Most commonEasy DIY

The on/off switch or control is set to off, or the wire arm is propped up so the maker thinks the bin is full. Easy to bump while loading the freezer.

  2. Water supply valve off or kinked line

    Most commonEasy DIY

No water reaches the ice maker: the shutoff valve behind or under the fridge is closed, or the line is pinched where the fridge was pushed back. The dispenser may also run slowly or not at all.

  3. Overdue or clogged water filter

    CommonEasy DIY

Small, hollow or thin cubes, slow ice, and a weak water dispenser. The filter is past the replacement date on its label or in the manual.

  4. Freezer too warm

    CommonModerate DIY

Ice is slushy, cubes stick together, or nothing freezes. The freezer should hold 0°F or below; an ice maker slows or stops above that.

  5. Frozen fill tube

    Less commonModerate DIY

The maker cycles but no water arrives, or you get a solid clump of ice at the fill tube. Often follows low water pressure or a partly clogged filter.

  6. Failed water inlet valve or ice maker unit

    Less commonCall a pro

The supply is on, the filter is new and the freezer is cold, but the maker never fills or never ejects ice; a buzzing or humming from the valve with no water.

Part: $60–330 (ice maker repair); $60–200 (ice maker replacement)

Quick checks

Unplug the fridge before reaching into the ice maker, and keep your hands out of the mechanism while it's powered. Don't chip ice off the mechanism with a knife or any sharp tool; you can damage the maker or the lines behind it. Let a frozen fill tube thaw naturally.

  1. Make sure the ice maker is switched on and the wire arm is down (or the control is set to on).
  2. Check the water shutoff valve is fully open and the line behind the fridge isn't kinked or crushed.
  3. Look at your filter date. If it's overdue, replace it and run a few cups of water through.
  4. Put a thermometer in the freezer and confirm it is at or below 0°F. Give it 24 hours after any change; a new batch takes hours.
  5. Look at the fill tube for a clump of ice. If you see one, turn the ice maker off and let it thaw on its own.

When to call a pro

The supply and filter are fine, the freezer is cold, and the maker still doesn't fill or eject ice, or the valve hums with no water. Anything involving the water line connection or wiring is a job for a pro if you aren't comfortable. For lifespan and upkeep, see the refrigerator guide.

Typical cost: HomeAdvisor puts ice maker repair at $60–330 and replacement at $60–200. A service call runs $150–200, and a diagnostic of $60–100 is often credited toward the repair.
