Outlets: dead outlets, tripping GFCIs and upkeep

Outlets are simple, and most trouble is a tripped device rather than a failed outlet. An outlet that isn't working is usually a tripped GFCI elsewhere or a tripped breaker, and a GFCI that keeps tripping usually points to moisture or a faulty appliance. If an outlet is warm, discolored, buzzing or smells burnt, switch off its breaker and stop using it, and never bypass a GFCI or swap it for a regular outlet.

Common problems
How long it should last

Typical lifespan: 40–50 years for a standard outlet; 7–15 years for a GFCI outlet

Signs it is near the end:

  • Plugs fall out or fit loosely.
  • The outlet works on and off.
  • A GFCI trips with nothing plugged in or won't reset.
  • Scorch marks, discoloring, buzzing or a burnt smell (switch off its breaker and stop using it).
Basic upkeep
  • Press Test, then Reset, on each GFCI outlet now and then, and check it resets.
  • Keep outdoor outlet covers closed and in good shape.
  • Don't overload a circuit with several high-draw appliances at once.
  • Replace damaged cords rather than using them.
  • Look for new scorch marks, discoloring or warmth, and switch off the breaker if you find any.
Common fixes
  • Furnace won't heat?

    FurnaceFall

The furnace runs but the house stays cold, which is usually a clogged filter, a thermostat setting, or an ignition fault.

  • Heat pump not heating?

    Heat pumpFall

The heat pump runs but the house stays cold, which is usually thermostat settings, a clogged filter, or an iced-over outdoor unit.

  • Washer won't drain?

    Washer

Water is left in the drum after the cycle, which is usually a clogged pump filter or a kinked drain hose.

  • Fridge not cooling?

    Fridge

The fridge section is warm or warming. The cause depends on whether the freezer is still cold, and the first fix is often free.

  • Washer won't spin?

    Washer

The drum fills and washes but won't spin, which is usually an unbalanced load, the lid switch, or a drain problem.
