Mini-split problems, lifespan and upkeep

A mini-split is a ductless heat pump: an indoor head on the wall connected to an outdoor unit by refrigerant lines. Most trouble comes from dirty filters, the remote's settings, a clogged condensate drain, or the outdoor unit. The room may be not cooling or heating, or the head may be leaking water. Because it's a heat pump, the heat pump not heating and heat pump blowing cold air pages apply too. Refrigerant work always belongs to a certified tech.

Common problems
How long it should last

Typical lifespan: varies with the make, the climate and how well the filters and drain are kept up; a well-kept unit can last many years

Signs it is near the end:

  • Repairs are getting frequent, or a single repair costs a large share of a new unit.
  • The room is slow to cool or warm even with clean filters.
  • Error codes keep coming back after a power reset.
  • The coil keeps icing up or the refrigerant keeps leaking.
Basic upkeep
  • Open the front cover and clean the filters when they collect dust.
  • Keep leaves, snow and debris off the outdoor unit.
  • Check that the drain hose isn't kinked and drains freely.
  • Keep the manual handy: the blinking-light error codes are listed there.
Common fixes
  • Furnace won't heat?

    FurnaceFall

The furnace runs but the house stays cold, which is usually a clogged filter, a thermostat setting, or an ignition fault.

  • Heat pump not heating?

    Heat pumpFall

The heat pump runs but the house stays cold, which is usually thermostat settings, a clogged filter, or an iced-over outdoor unit.

  • Washer won't drain?

    Washer

Water is left in the drum after the cycle, which is usually a clogged pump filter or a kinked drain hose.

  • Fridge not cooling?

    Fridge

The fridge section is warm or warming. The cause depends on whether the freezer is still cold, and the first fix is often free.

  • Washer won't spin?

    Washer

The drum fills and washes but won't spin, which is usually an unbalanced load, the lid switch, or a drain problem.
