Dryer problems, lifespan and upkeep
A clothes dryer tumbles wet laundry in a heated drum while a fan pushes the hot, damp air out through a vent duct. Electric dryers heat with an element on a 240-volt circuit; gas dryers use a gas burner. Most trouble comes from airflow, the heat source, and a few switches. A dryer that is not heating or won't start is the classic sign. Lint is the safety issue: the NFPA counts about 15,970 home fires a year involving dryers or washers (2010–2014 averages), and the leading cause is failure to clean (31%). Gas and 240-volt work is for a pro.
- Dryer not heating? The drum spins but the clothes stay damp, which is usually a blocked vent, a tripped breaker, or a failed heating part.
- Dryer won't start?Nothing happens when you press start, or the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn, which is usually the door switch, a thermal fuse, or the drive belt.
Typical lifespan: about 10–15 years
Signs it is near the end:
- A repair would cost more than half the price of a new dryer.
- Clothes need more than one cycle even though the vent is clear.
- A loud squeal, thump or rumble from worn rollers, belt or motor.
- A blown thermal fuse or tripped breaker keeps coming back.
- Clean the lint screen after every load, and check the vent behind the dryer for kinks or crushing.
- Clean the vent duct at least once a year, more often with a long run or a large household.
- Use a rigid or semi-rigid metal vent duct, not plastic or vinyl foil.
- Don't overload the drum, and dry heavy items like towels separately.
- Wipe lint from the lint screen slot and around the door seal.
- FurnaceFall
The furnace runs but the house stays cold, which is usually a clogged filter, a thermostat setting, or an ignition fault.
- Heat pumpFall
The heat pump runs but the house stays cold, which is usually thermostat settings, a clogged filter, or an iced-over outdoor unit.
- Washer
Water is left in the drum after the cycle, which is usually a clogged pump filter or a kinked drain hose.
- Fridge
The fridge section is warm or warming. The cause depends on whether the freezer is still cold, and the first fix is often free.
- Washer
The drum fills and washes but won't spin, which is usually an unbalanced load, the lid switch, or a drain problem.
