Garbage disposal won't turn on?

If you flip the switch and hear nothing at all, it's almost always power: the reset button on the bottom of the unit, a tripped breaker or GFCI outlet, or the switch. If it hums but doesn't spin, it's jammed instead.

Not sure which one it is? Snap your garbage disposal and we’ll narrow it down.

Does it hum or buzz but not spin?

That means it's jammed, not out of power. Garbage disposal jammed or humming

Likely causes
  1. Reset button tripped

    Most commonEasy DIY

Total silence. The small red or black button on the bottom of the unit (under the sink) is popped out. It trips when the motor overheats or overloads.

  2. Tripped breaker or GFCI outlet

    Most commonEasy DIY

Silence, and the reset button is already in. The breaker is in the middle or off position, or the GFCI outlet (the one with Test and Reset buttons) has tripped. It may also control other kitchen outlets.

  3. Wall switch or plug problem

    CommonModerate DIY

Silence, with breaker and reset both fine. The switch feels loose or gives no click, or the cord has come partly out of the outlet under the sink.

  4. Burned-out motor

    Less commonCall a pro

Silence or a faint click even after a reset, power confirmed, and the unit is close to 10 years old. A failed motor in an old unit is usually replaced, not repaired.

  5. Internal wiring fault or leaking body

    Less commonCall a pro

Water dripping from the unit's body or near its wiring, a burning smell, or the reset keeps tripping at once. A leaking body is usually replaced, not repaired.

Quick checks

Turn the disposal off at the wall switch and unplug it or switch off the breaker before reaching into the sink or working underneath. Never put a hand in the chamber; use tongs or pliers to pull out objects, with the power off. Press the reset button once or twice at most. If it keeps tripping, stop: the motor is overheating or jammed. If water is leaking under the sink near the disposal's wiring or outlet, turn the power off at the breaker before touching anything. Never pour chemical drain cleaner into a disposal, and if someone already has, don't reach in or work on it, because it can splash.

  1. Turn the disposal off at the wall switch, then unplug it or switch off its breaker before reaching under the sink.
  2. Look at the bottom of the unit for the reset button; if it's popped out, wait a few minutes for the motor to cool, then press it firmly once.
  3. Switch the power back on and try the disposal. If it stays silent, check the breaker panel and any GFCI outlet nearby (press Reset on the outlet).
  4. Check that the cord is fully plugged in and the wall switch clicks firmly.
  5. If it hums but won't spin, stop; it's jammed, so follow the jam page instead.

When to call a pro

The reset keeps tripping, the breaker or GFCI trips again, there's water near the wiring or outlet, you smell burning, or the unit is silent after every check and close to 10 years old, when replacing it usually beats repairing it. If it hums instead, see jammed or humming. For lifespan and upkeep, see the garbage disposal guide.

Typical cost: A reset, breaker or GFCI fix is free to do yourself. If the unit has failed, replacement runs about $200–625 installed (around $550 on average): the unit is $50–400 depending on horsepower, plus labor at $50–100 an hour, about an hour for a standard swap. Big-box store installation averages $189 ($97–339), and electrical work can add $100 or more.
